Lucky couple, Patrick Morling and his wife Paula, say they have their dog’s picky eating habits to thank for helping them to win $1 million on a National Lottery scratchcard.
Ollie gets his Butcher's chunks in jelly
Patrick Morling made a special trip to the Asda supermarket in Havant to buy their Springer-Staffy cross pooch’s favourite meal. While in the supermarket he decided on a whim to buy a Monopoly Classic National Lottery scratchcard.
Speaking to lottery officials, Mr Morling, a storeman for a paper cup company, said, "We'd already done our big shop earlier in the day but Ollie is very particular about his food so I had to go to a different store to stock up for him.
"As I was leaving, I decided on a whim to buy a scratchcard.
"I do like to play them from time to time and normally it's a £2 one, but for some reason, I decided to treat myself to the £5 Monopoly Classic.
"When I'd finished playing I got back in the queue and waited my turn before I handed it over to the sales assistant and asked her to verify it was actually a £1 Million winning scratchcard.
‘I asked the lady behind the counter if I’d won £1m and she said: “Yes you have and I don’t know what to do!”
‘I replied – “neither do I, I’ve never won £1m before”.
‘She made checks and confirmed I’d won. The lady behind me hugged and congratulated me and that’s when I started to feel funny.
"Let me tell you, it created quite a disturbance in the store and I thoroughly enjoyed the hugs and pats on the back I received from the other shoppers who I think we’re in more shock than me."
Plans for the scratchcard win
The happy couple says that thanks to becoming instant millionaires, they are planning around-the-world holidays to celebrate.
The first country on the list is New Zealand, as they had planned to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary there in August finances just wouldn't allow it. With the lucky win, they are planning to go for their 31st instead. They also said that they would like to visit Canada where Paula has relatives she’s never met.
"Paula has family in Canada she has never met so that may be another trip, or perhaps we'll save the back and forth and just go around the world instead.
"It really is magic. Who would have thought that a trip to buy Ollie's dog food would have resulted in us chatting about paying for weddings, round the world trips and buying dream homes."
Mr Morling also told National Lottery officials that they will be helping their children financially. They will be paying for their youngest daughter’s wedding and a deposit for their other daughter's house.
The couple’s youngest daughter, her partner and children were sat down before Patrick asked if he could pay for their wedding. ‘I showed them the scratchcard and told them everything had been verified and my daughter just kept saying “oh my god” and her partner just had his head in his hands,’ Patrick said.
‘Knowing I can help them both out makes me feel like a proper dad. ‘We’ve always lived one month to the next, paid the bills first, and used whatever is left to fritter.
According to Mr Morling, ‘Ollie rules the roost and he’ll continue to do so. He’ll be getting lots of treats,’ including a brand new comfy bed.
‘Ollie has always been a special dog ever since we got him at four months old when he was seriously overweight, he’s not a pet, he’s part of our family.’
