A beaming newly minted lottery millionaire came forward on Tuesday to collect his €1m prize from the National Lottery headquarters.
Odhrán Doherty, from The Glebe in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, arrived at the Lottery Headquarter in a white stretch Hummer limo with his family and friends.
He told lottery officials that his father had purchased the lottery ticket and had given it to him as a gift. The lucky winner went on to say that when he discovered his lottery win, he immediately told his father who thought he it was an April Fools’ Day prank.
His father, Liam, said that he bought three lottery tickets on Saturday, March 30 from Barclay’s Newsagents in Raphoe. He bought one for himself, one for his wife Margaret and one for Odhran.
The youngest sibling told lottery officials that they nearly forgot to bring the ticket as, "My father put it in a safe place and it was a wee bit too safe to be honest!"
It was while Odhrán was on his way to a party that he discovered his win. At first he thought he had won a couple of thousand euros but then discovered he had in fact won €1 million!
Happy lad, happy dad
His father told lottery officials that he’s absolutely “delighted” that his son won and joked that previously, “he was always looking for money off me!”
Plans for the lottery prize
Even though the lucky winner arrived in a limo, it’s another luxury vehicle that the winner has his eyes set on and that’s a €100,000 Range Rover. The big-hearted winner doesn’t want it for himself but rather as a gift for his long-term girlfriend Jessica Orr. The couple moved in together in January.
"I was given a new Range Rover to take out to Raphoe for a test drive on Monday.
"I might invest in one for her. She was good to me the whole time, so look I may treat her.
"Everything she had if I was ever stuck she would always give it to me so I may treat her back."
The winner, who’s a sheep farmer said he would also like to spend some of his lottery winnings on a new tractor and a silage machine.
He has no intentions of retiring and said that he would be back at work the following day. After all, its lambing season. When he does have the time though, he plans to go on a skiing holiday.
He told lottery officials that there’s no way that the money will go to his head. Besides, his family will be there to make sure that it won’t happen.
He said that he would get some good advice as two of his family works in the legal industry.
