The world’s 50 best restaurants for 2019
The world’s 50 best restaurants for 2019 have just been announced at an awards ceremony in Singapore.
Those that made the list were chosen based on the opinions and experiences of over 1,000 international restaurant industry experts in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy. They are based on leading trends in the industry from all corners of the Earth.
The Academy is made up of 50% female voters and 50% male voters and is split into 26 separate regions around the world. Each region has its own voting panel of 40 members. The members in each region are made up of food writers and critics, chefs, restaurateurs and well-travelled gourmets, each of whom has 10 votes. They look for restaurants that serve haute cuisine – which is characterised by the meticulous preparation and careful presentation of food.

1. Mirazur in Menton, France
Although we would love to delve into all fifty top restaurants in the world, we’ve decided to focus our taste buds on the top three.
Situated in the elegant seaside town of Menton in the French Riviera, lottery jackpot winners will take in the panoramic views from the dining room in this three-Michelin-starred restaurant. Mirazur roughly translates as "look at the blue," where guests will be able to see the Mediterranean, the mountains, the town of Menton and the multi-million dollar yachts in its harbour.
The menu changes every single day, which means that even the regular diners who come three times a week have never had to eat the same dish.
Unlike other restaurants, at Mirazur, you essentially leave yourself in the hands of the staff. You select how many courses you would like, reveal any dislikes or dietary requirements and let them do the rest.
The lunch tasting menu will set you back €160 ($182) per person, and the full tasting menu is €260 ($295) per person.
If you’re thinking of popping in while you are in the area, think again, as reservations for a table are not available until August.
Noma in Copenhagen
Situated on a small lake just outside the centre of Copenhagen is the restaurant that was voted the second-best in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. It’s a two-Michelin-star restaurant run by Chef René Redzepi.
During the colder months, the restaurant acts as a sea-to-table restaurant, with a focus on the plumpest and juiciest fish from the Nordic oceans. A few months later, when the earth begins to grow green, vegetables take centre stage. In the autumn guests are treated to a cornucopia of mushrooms, berries and game.
Noma releases reservations three times over the course of the year, and if you want to stand a chance of getting a table, you're going to need to be on the Noma website the minute booking opens. Once you manage to secure a table, you'll need to pay for your food upfront.
Asador Etxebarri in Axpe, Spain
Asador Etxebarri in Axpe is a unique rural restaurant where everything on the menu is grilled to perfection. Dishes are relatively simple, relying on the quality of the super-fresh ingredients and the masterful grill cooking of chef-owner Victor Arguinzoniz. In some circles, he’s a god when it comes to grilling. He’s self-taught and has had a lifetime love affair with wood, which has earned him a Michelin star.
