Couple Become Instant Millionaires On A Scratch card Thanks To Their Cat

A couple from Devon are currently celebrating becoming instant millionaires on a scratch card and it’s all thanks to their orange tabby cat, Shortcake.

Couple win big on a scratchcard thanks to their cat

Andrew and Paula Hancock who run a catering business together had forgotten the cat's dinner one evening last month. Andrew ended up rushing out to buy food for their cat Shortcake at the petrol station close to their home.
While he was there, he decided to try his luck and bought a scratch card. He scratched it off right there and to his utter shock, he won the £1m jackpot.

He was so excited that he immediately went home and forgot to buy six-year-old ginger tom Shortcake's food again - so the pet ended up with ham later that evening.

“The plan was to fill the car up with fuel and then get the cat food.

“But while paying for the fuel I bought the scratchcard then sat in the car.

“Then I realised I’d forgotten the cat food... I thought I’ll scratch this off before going back in.

"I scratched off the lucky symbol – a duck – and couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

“I looked and looked again and started to get a bit hot when I realised I won. I checked it about seven or eight times.

When he got home Paula said, “He just stood there with his legs wide and his arms in the air saying ‘I’ve won a million pounds!’

“I just looked at him and said ‘Are you sure? Let me look. I know how a scratch card works.”
The couple decided to hide the scratch card inside a cookbook for safekeeping until the win could be validated by the National Lottery.

Plans for the prize

When asked if they had any ideas yet as to how they would be spending their lucky scratch card prize, they said that they hope to take some time off from the catering business and enjoy a few trips abroad.

When asked if Shortcake will be getting a piece of the pie, Andrew said he will be getting an upgrade on his cat food after landing the couple the huge scratch card win.
Their first purchase, however, was a new mobile phone for their 12-year-old son.

They also revealed that they will pay off their mortgage and get a new car. Paula has also been browsing property websites for a new house already.
