In a serious run of luck, a couple from the UK not only won £2m in the UK Lottery but they received news that their 15-year-old son, Ewan, was declared cancer-free!
John and Alison McDonald kicked off the New Year the best possible way when they received the incredible news that their son was given the all-clear and was finally cancer-free.
Alison and John McDonald, from County Durham, England told lottery officials that just three days after winning the £2m in the UK Lottery they were given even better news about their son.
The 62-year-old father said that when he double-checked his lottery numbers, he thought he might win a nominal prize after matching a couple of numbers.
However, just like most big lotto winners realising that he had, in fact, matched all six winning UK Lottery numbers immediately left him completely speechless.
The lucky dad, who is a former security officer said that his son had been undergoing chemotherapy for most of the year for non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Speaking to lottery official he said, “It’s just like all of our lifelong dreams came true in the space of three days.”
He went on to say that he had often put in 70-hour weeks working as a security guard. His wife, Alison, worked at a local optician but after winning the UK Lottery both decided to quit their jobs.
“Everyone always dreams of winning the lottery at Christmas and talks about how amazing this would be, but Allison and I never believed it would happen to us – and it has.”
The fact that their son has now been declared cancer-free is “truly amazing.”
The family says they are very thankful and are looking forward to what is certain to be an amazing 2020 for all of them.
“This is just the most amazing feeling ever,” said Allison.
Cancer patient wins $200,000 on the way to final chemotherapy session
The UK couple aren’t the only lottery players experiencing luck not only with the lottery but with Cancer too.
Ronnie Foster from Pink Hill, North Carolina, said he first purchased a $1 ticket and won a measly $5. However, he decided to use his $5 lottery win and buy two more lottery scratch-off tickets.
While on his way to his last chemotherapy treatment he scratched the tickets. The first ticket won him nothing but the second ticket was worth a whopping $200,000!
Speaking to lottery officials he said, "I saw all those zeroes and I froze. I didn't believe it until I gave it to the clerk at the counter to scan. When it showed, 'Go to lottery headquarters, I started shaking. I couldn't believe it."
Foster, a retired Department of Transportation worker, is battling colon cancer and nearing the end of his treatment. The lottery win made a good day an even better one.
"I was already happy because it was my last round of chemo," said Foster.
"Winning this made it my lucky day."
He said that the lottery prize money will go towards paying off some of the treatment costs that weren't covered by his health insurance.
He also stated that the rest of the lottery prize money will be saved "for the future."
After taxes, Foster took home $141,501. The lucky winner claimed his prize on Friday.
